I often wrestle with the tension of the individual-community tension. I recognize that individuals are unique in their own ways. On the other hand, there is the aspect of community that further defines ones individual identity. For example, one does not really know one is a teacher unless there is a community to teach and who affirms one’s teaching ability.

Rod also seems to have been wrestling with this tension. In one of his recent posts (here), he traces a bit of the development of his thought, noting his first reaction to modern Western individualism and some of its emphases on separating the individual from the community. He then offers his current position, which started with a conversation with Rob. To find out what this position is, you’ll need to read Rod. I think he is on the mark.
