For a class of mine this term I had the opportunity to choose what I would be reading. One choice was the full text of God’s Empowering Presence by Gordon Fee. I know it is a long book but I think it is doable. Sadly, it does not appear that Fee himself expected any of his readers to engage in such a task. As early as page eleven he writes, “I have no illusions that anyone will read the book through in its entirety.” Oops?
Well, I guess I’d better exceed Fee’s expectations if I am going to make the grade! Is there anyone out there who has accomplished this task? I need a message of hope!
Haha, I can’t believe he wrote that… Even if the book is long, I’d prefer the author not let me know that he does not expect anyone to read it from cover to cover…
No kidding, now I am wondering if I made a mistake by choosing to read through a book that the author wrote as a reference!
I read it and in fact it was the first biblical studies/theology book I ever read. I loved it though and in fact it is my favorite book. I got a chance to meet Fee and have him sign it and he was surprised when I told him I read it (and Pauline Christology). I guess he didn’t really expect anyone to read them or at least no one outside the academy. It’s a great book and I hope you really enjoy it.
Real scholars NEVER read through an entire book, didn’t ya know? 🙂
Ah, that explains why no one considers me to be a scholar! 🙂
Where is Fee’s home church? Would love to hear him speak sometime while he’s still with us.
My husband rabidly loves Gordon Fee, he says he was his most influential professor at Regent. He has his lectures on tapes. Cassette tapes! ha
Cassette tapes?! Geez, that is dedication. I bet there must be some way to transfer the audio.
Seriously, I should find digital files, if Regent is even that on the ball. haha
