In a 2009 interview at Luther Seminary Eugene Peterson was asked about the value of reading the Scriptures in community. As always he gave a very wise, thoughtful answer. As part of the answer he gave a very interesting definition of heresy that I thought I would share:

It is easy to be a heretic. Heresy is basically an attempt to simplify the message; get it so I can handle it and take charge of it.

In context he is not speaking of intense study for the sake of understanding, but isolated, individualistic study that results in the refusal of a community hermeneutic. It is more likely we will fall into error on our own than it is that we will do so together (in the community of Holy Spirit infilled people).
