I have blogged on a couple of topics in the last few weeks discussing our churches being culturally relevant, and the dissatisfaction with current worship music. I think that Gordon Fee speaks well to that subject, and something that I hope that we are all striving towards.
It does not take too much further reflection to see how relevant – and crucial – Jesus’ message and ministry are to the total global mission of the church. If Jesus for the most part limited his ministry to the Jews of his own historical context, our own task is to bring the good news of the kingdom to our own historical context – our global village, the world. There are several ways in which this is so, flowing directly out of the mission and message of Jesus himself. – Gordon Fee “Listening to the Spirit in the Text” p174
The challenge of Jesus is that he both (a) was culturally incarnate and (2) challenged his culture. He is a great model for navigating those tensions. Too often people focus on either his ability to be culturally accommodated or critical of culture. He was both and I think the church should strive to be as well.
Robert,
I’m spending some time with Listening to the Spirit in the Text right now. It’s a great little resource.
But I believe Fee would have added the move of the Spirit in our times as the decisive factor.
Brain, so true. I have been thinking quite a bit about how we impact our culture since I came back from the conference. It’s funny to have stumbled on to that quote, if I am not studying something from Fee, I usually grab one of his books and start reading all week in preparation for Friday. When I came across this, it just got me going again. When I read “Our task is to bring…” I thought YES! This is part of what I want to communicate, this is what I believe is so important in the life of the church.
