So I see a whole bunch of people sharing Kevin DeYoung’s review of Rob Bell’s forthcoming book Love Wins on Facebook, Twitter, and so forth. I found the title a bit concerning: “God is Still Holy and What You Learned in Sunday School is Still True” (read here).
I say this because in Sunday School I was taught that holiness meant not having a television in the home; girls were not to wear make-up, pants, or cut hair; CCM was the only legitimate music (sometimes); facial hair was a sign of rebellion, like the hippies; and a list of other thing.
Also, I learned that all Trinitarian Christians are going to hell. I was raised around Oneness Pentecostals. So now I am confused because DeYoung is telling me that he is going to hell.
Bummer.
Well, that’s just too bad!
Who’s Kevin DeYoung? 🙂 (satire)
Lemuel: Too bad, so sad.
@ Fr. Robert: Some pastor who does good John Piper impressions. 😉
Maybe a good time to read Titus 3. We were all ignorant of God at sometime in ourt lives.
Yeah the title be misleading unless you read the review. He makes clear the issues Bell raises in relation to Sunday School and we all know what the hot one is for this book (pun intended).
Ar ewe just looking for something to criticize here?
@Jonathan: Observe the “category” under which the post is filed.
I don’t like that you require me to pay attention…
🙂
Now I’m depressed! I don’t want what I learned in Sunday school to be correct either. I also REALLY don’t want to go back to OP sunday school. Brian I think he is saying that everyone who writes on this blog are on our way to hell. yikes!
@Josh: True, I am going to hell now too. I knew I shouldn’t have sung “Holy, Holy, Holy, Blessed Trinity”!
@Brian: My book of the Daily Offices is also extremely incriminating Trinitarian evidence. I’m in trouble!
@Josh: Yeah, you’re screwed.
😀
Wait… facial hair is rebellious? Man, I’ve been trying for years to grow a beard 😦
Bummer indeed.
@Jeremy: That’s what they told me. It explains why I had a beard almost every day since college!
My dear, sweet, innocent, naïve Brian! Isn’t it obvious that you’re not part of the “you” which that title addresses? “You” there refers to “us” — and you, my friend, are nothing like us.
@Esteban: True, true. It’s all coming together now!
There goes my cigars….bummer!
@Julio: True, cigars are a big no-no in Sunday School!
@Joshua – I’m not going to hell, I don’t believe in it…
@ Mark: haha! Thats the way Mark.
🙂
