If anyone is interested Ben Witherington has an excellent post on the Biblical understanding of hell. By Biblical I mean historical contextual not theological.

It’s a good one.
I have to say, that’s one HELL of a title for your blog post. Dragged me in right away. 😛
Mark,
I believe myself that the Scripture text is itself both historical (to some degree) and theological. So the doctrine of hell (geenna), which is extended to “the unquenchable fire” and “where their worm dies not and the fire is not quenched.” Then we have Hades…Sheol, death, and a place of intermediate and temporary for the doomed, (Rev.6:8 ; 20:13). Btw, “Tartarus” is not hell, sheol or hades, but a place of/for those angels that sinned against God Himself (2 Peter 2:4).
Mark,
Thanks for the heads up.
🙂
