So, you may have been wondering how Moses knew the details to the six days of creation. There is an answer and it should finally put this silly Creation-Evolution debate to rest:
“And the angel of the presence spake to Moses according to the word of the Lord, saying: Write the complete history of the creation, how in six days the Lord God finished all His works and all that He created, and kept Sabbath on the seventh day and hallowed it for all ages, and appointed it as a sign for all His works” (Book of Jubilees, II.1)
An angel told him, directly! Darwin didn’t have any angelic visitations. I think the following formula settles the matter:
Moses learned about creation directly from angels + Darwin studied birds and turtles = Creationism wins!
Now that this debate has concluded what shall we do….
Ha! Debate settled indeed 😛
I’m reading _The Lost World of Genesis One_ by John Walton. So far, the Functional view of Genesis 1 Walton proposes seems to settle the issue a lot better than this verse 🙂
-Insert Rob Bell debate.- 🙂
Job 4:18 NRSVA Even in his servants he puts no trust, and his angels he charges with error; 😉
Wow. Too bad Protestants don’t think Jubilees is part of the canon. 🙂
@T.C.: I want to read Walton’s book. I have for a while. I must do it!
@Ryan: When all else fails bring up Bell. He does seem to be the newest, shiniest target.
@Chuck: I’ve heard angels don’t make very good theologians.
@Justin: Very true!
Brian: Angels make poor artists too. They don’t see any grays.
@Chuck: Ha! What can angels do for a vocation?!
Brian: Angels sing well, but only in Hebrew, supposedly.
Choirs seem to be their niche or so I have heard.
Killjoy! 🙂 It’s interesting that Moses also wrote of himself that he was the most humble man on the face of the earth.
Something tells me there was a lot of post exilic editorial work going on in those passages.
Well, you can continue to debate the matter…but it is settled. 😉
I believe Jubilees was written 2nd century BCE, so yes, it would be post-exilic story telling.
Whew! I feel SO MUCH better now! Thanks! lol!
Anytime, anytime.
Nice try, Brian, but before you declare the creation-evolution debate over, you might want to check out the cover story of the June 2011 issue of Christianity Today magazine, which is “The Search for the Historical Adam,” not to mention Prof. C. John Collins’ just released book, “Did Adam and Eve Really Exist? Who They Were and Why You Should Care,” which purports to answer the question but doesn’t. Besides, what you do whenever you need a ratings boost for your blog? 🙂
@Paul: Obviously the editors of CT and Prof. Collins haven’t read the Book of Jubilees. 😉
