I’ve agreed to write a side-bar column on the differences between Jonathan Edwards and Charles Finney on the nature of conversion for a magazine my seminary produces a couple times a year. As readers of this blog know I am no expert in historical and/or American Christian theology. Any resources you can recommend will be greatly welcomed!
Charles Finney, Jonathan Edwards
I have a book of essays written by Finny packed away in one of my boxes. I’ll see if I can find it. I can’t remember the title now. The major difference is that Finny held to and developed a unique form of theology far different to that of Calvinism (of any stripes) and Wesleyan theology…and held to a more moral victory stance.
Off course one needs to take note of the differences between the early Finny and the mature older Finny when talking about the differences.
I think Mark Noll has a helpful section in America’s God where he discusses the fundamental differences between the First and Second Great Awakenings.
@Craig: Thanks for pointing that out. What would you say is the big difference between a younger Finney and an older one?
@BT: Awesome, thanks for the lead.
An interesting booklet is “Asahel Nettleton Forgotten Revivalist.” The reason that I recommend it is that he was a Calvinist who, I think ,was contemporary with Finney; which would also put him as probably related to the Edwardsean tradition.
@JSkip: I wonder if it easy to find a copy? I will have to look around.
Brian,
Check Chapel Library of Mt Zion in Pensacola, FL. You should be able to find them online.
They should send it to you freely, if they have it.

Perhaps this will help. Mt Zion does not have it, but the second link is that of which I spoke.
