According to The Apostle’s Creed today is the day that “Jesus descended into hell” (κατελθόντα εις τα κατώτατα) which can be a very confusing claim. Michael Barber of The Sacred Page podcast has done a special episode on this subject titled, “‘He Descended into Hell…’ Did Jesus Really Go to Hell?” that you might find helpful.
I think we have regularly confused hades (the grave) and gehenna (‘hell’). I might argue that Christ proclaimed in hades, but not in gehenna-hell. Hell (or lake of fire) seems reserved for the final judgment. I’ve noticed how lots of songs, ones that I love, centred around Good Friday and Resurrection Sunday talk of Jesus defeating hell. But I’m not sure that is fully true. Christ defeated death, the grave (1 Cor 15). But I would still like to do a little more study around these concepts/words.
