As with my post yesterday (see Philo on Adam and a request for advice) where I asked for resources on Philo’s writings on Adam so today I reach out to readers of this blog for two things:
First, I am studying Josephus’ interpretation of Adam. I see that he covers this subject in Antiquities of the Jews, but does he give Adam much attention anywhere else?
Second, if you know of any good articles, monographs, books on this subject please share!
Thank you!
Brian, good places to start are the survey by George W. Nickelsberg, ‘Jewish Literature Between The Bible And The Mishnah’, which discusses Josephus and provides an overview of his writings. Anything by Steve Mason, e.g. ‘Josephus and the New Testament’ is essential.
Also, you might want to consult the survey: Michael E. Stone (ed.), Jewish Writings of the Second Temple Period, Vol. 2: Apocrypha, Pseudepigrapha, Qumran, Philo, Josephus (Fortress, 1984). I hope these suggestions help you!
As Paul noted above, anything by Steve Mason.
Also see Louis Feldman, Studies in Josephus’ Rewritten Bible.
Excellent, thank you two!
Kind of old now, but Levison has a chapter on Adam in Josephus in his dissertation (Portraits of Adam in Early Judaism: From Sirach to 2 Baruch).
