Argentine Cardinal Jorge Bergoglio was elected to be the next Pope of Rome. Congratulations to my Roman Catholic brothers and sisters. I thought a Pope from the global south would be good for Christianity, but I did not expect it to happen. I was surprised, pleasantly!
The new Bishop of Rome has taken the name “Francis.” It seems to be after the great Francis of Assisi and/or Francis Xavier, the co-founder of the Jesuits. This is the first Pope from the Jesuit order.

I’m happy to see a non-European pope too. Hopefully he will be a good administrator and be proactive about handling internal problems and scandals.
