My series on John the Baptist made it into Jim West’s August 2010 Biblical Studies Carnival, but I have mixed feelings about it because I think he is making a joke about the title of the series (“The Shrinking of John the Baptist”). Let me post what he said and you tell me what you think he means:
“Brian LePort leads us down the path of examining John the Baptist’s shrinkage in a multi-part series. I don’t know why. I worry about Brian. I think you should all put him on your list of prayers.” (See full post here)
OK, so what does he mean. I think I may know what he means but I am not well-versed in Westian humor so I need an interpreter.
I think he thought you were making a movie, “Honey, I Shrunk John the Baptist.”
Hmmm…that would be an interesting movie.
I think the joke is obvious; especially to Seinfeld fans.
I think I may know what he meant but sadly I have not watched enough Seinfeld to know.
I dare not consider the possibilities for fear of diminishing my purity of mind!
Here ya go:
I was gonna say — it isn’t just Westian humor, but Seinfeldian humor!
Esteban: Sho you right!
Ha! I had a feeling it went something like this. To save John the Baptist’s reputation, and my own, I changed the title of the series. There is no way it could have continued with a straight face otherwise!
What? You mean you weren’t talking about the anatomical impact that spending all that time in the Jordan might have had on John the Baptist? I’m totally going to have to read those posts again.
I think the worse part is the fact was in water a lot…
